About Volunteer NWT
Canada Volunteerism Initiative
The CVI was announced in December 2001. It was eliminated in federal budget cuts announced in September 2006. Volunteer NWT was one of 13 Local Networks set up in each province and territory.
The Canada Volunteerism Initiative (CVI) goals were:
- to improve the ability of organizations to benefit from the contribution of volunteers
- to encourage Canadians to participate in voluntary organizations
- to enhance the experience of volunteering.
In partnership with the Department of Canadian Heritage and Human Resources Development Canada, the three national centres oversaw the delivery of a range of programs and services related to volunteerism.
- The Knowledge Development Centre supported both local and national research to improve our understanding of volunteerism. Imagine Canada operated the Knowledge Development Centre.
- The Information, Capacity-Building and Awareness Centre ran an information clearinghouse and awareness campaigns. It administered Local Network funding. Volunteer Canada operated this Centre.
- The Community Support Centre funded local projects that tested new and innovative methods to maintain volunteerism. Volunteer Canada also operated this Centre.
Local Networks, such as Volunteer NWT, made sure the CVI responded to the needs and priorities of voluntary groups and volunteers across Canada.
